HOWARD OSBORNE

Pushing Boundaries

Oh, who would have ever thought it

A traditional brass band playing jazz

Dave Brubeck’s Blue Rondo a la Turk

And that it may in reality, even work

Yes, there is the hint of brassy pazazz

Then the complex time signatures hit

Yet no relaxed interpretation allowed

Only that score that must be played

But underneath, correct all the while

One can detect lips turn into a smile

As quite a jazz performance is made

And as required, both soft and loud

This choice being hard to understand

As pieces played, are usually marches

Yet this number is pushing boundaries

Tight, with its looseness, if you please

Syncopated rhythm under the arches

A nod to Grimethorpe Colliery Band
